Back in the day, architects were rock stars, with platinum hits like the Pantheon, the Sant'Ignazio de Loyola church, and the Sant'Agnese in Agone. Rock on! Each offered amazement of one sort or another. As we wandered around this part of the city, we bounced between centuries, religions, and cultures. Where else can one visit four ancient Egyptian obelisks within blocks of each other (besides Egypt)? Or pagan temples now serving as home to a colony of cats? We stumbled into the exciting finale of a wedding at one church - I assumed the bride was a local, until I heard her say, "One more picture, then we're outta here." Wrapped up the day's outing with a Yom Kippur visit to the Synagogue in the Jewish Ghetto, where they cordoned off access to the tourists - but I uttered the secret password (l'shana tovah) and was let in. Toda raba.
Had the best banana gelato of my life - really! And bucatini alla matricianna, spaghetti carbonara, and kebabs.
